There is time during the day at Gateway School when the children are in mixed-age groups allowing the younger children to learn from the older children, as well as allowing the older children to lead and teach the younger children.
When it’s teacher led, it’s an activity. When it’s child led, it’s play. Play is the brain’s favorite way to learn.
That is why we PLAY at Gateway School! If we teach children how to enjoy the process of learning, then we have truly done something important for that child. My philosophy is that children learn best through active participation. Curiosity is the key to success in learning. Our goal is to increase a child’s curiosity in the world.
Confidence doesn’t come when you have all the answers. It comes when you are ready to face all the questions.
I believe learning is a lifelong process. If we first learn to love learning, we will benefit from the joy we experience in the process. Music is a vitally important element in supporting learning at Gateway School. Higher order thinking skills are established when music is synthesized with learning. That is why I think it is so important for me to work with the children regarding musical elements every day.
“You’ve got a friend in me.” From the movie Toy Story
As Director of Gateway School, it’s not only important for me to help children and teachers feel like they have a friend here, but also help the parents feel like they have a friend. We have a family atmosphere at Gateway that provides warmth and comfort for everyone involved. I am able to touch base with every family daily during arrival times. Families are important here!
Tell me and I forget, teach me and I remember, involve me and I learn.”Benjamin Franklin
Our hands-on activities at Gateway allow children to make choices based on their own interests. Teacher planning is critical but spontaneity is important for the immediate needs of children’s learning. Watching children observe, question, and discover our natural environment is how we help children learn. What is most important to me is to know that I have allowed each child to express their creativity and uniqueness as they learn.
The most wasted of all days is one without laughter. ~ E.E. Cummings
Gateway School provides laughter for the children and teachers every day. When a child comes to me knowing exactly what he/she wants to say and says, “I need some hanitizer” instead of “hand sanitizer”; it tickles me. It’s just another chance to teach a child something new!
Speak gently. It is better far to rule by love than fear!” by David Bates
In a very energetic setting, my calmness is the key to the dynamics of my classroom.Children learn to love to learn because they trust the teachers at Gateway. I want this to be a safe, comfortable environment for the children. A calm demeanor from the teacher increases a child’s confidence in a task.
“The only way to do great work is to love what you do.”Steve Jobs
A love of music with children increases the love of what I do. Teaching children to do for themselves helps make them more successful. Using my creativity to help children learn will increase their creativity. This is what I love about teaching at Gateway School!
